For example, the trend in family sofas for 2009 was brightly colored pillows and throw with neutral sofa. This year, the couches are brightly colored with neutral pillows and throws.

Trying to keep up with yearly trend changes can get expensive. It could also leave you with uncomfortable, useless furniture and unattractive pieces that are too fragile to have around children. Fortunately, there are other ways to keep up with the trend without breaking the bank, sacrificing comfort, or relegating the kids to their bedrooms until next year’s trend.

5 Ways to Go Trendy while Staying Family Friendly

Durability – You should begin any redecoration with quality furniture that can serve the family, and withstand it. Also look for storage — the necessity in family furniture. AmishFurnitureHome.com’s vast inventory of furniture provides tons of extra storage with additional (sometimes hidden) spaces. Amish craftsman build with sturdy woods, which are perfect for family use.

Slipcovers – This handy fashion accessory is your friend when trying to chase the trends. They can change the look of a sofa, loveseat, and even dining room chairs. Slipcovers are a fraction of the price of a new piece and they come in all colors and patterns. The slipcovers can be long or short, made of spandex, cotton, or fabric blends. You can easily argue that the best quality of the slipcovers is their durability. Spills are inevitable so why not make the cleanup easier? Simply pull the cover off the furniture and toss it in the wash. Change them as often as you like without breaking the bank.

Pull the shades. A lampshade is another fix for a room. Change it as much as the slipcovers because they are similar in variety and pricing. The decorating possibilities are endless.

Stained Wood – Put a little hard work into the decorating by stripping and staining or reupholstering your furniture pieces. Stains can change the look in a matter of hours. Upholstery works in the same way. All it takes is the price of the stain, upholstery nails, fabric, and tools.

Covers – Cover up your table, cabinet and buffet tops for a different look. Take a trendy pattern and make it into a runner, tablecloth, throw or mat for a vase, decorative basket, candles or any other accessory. This is better than buying new furniture for a different look.

The Trendy Family Rooms

A family doesn’t have to relegate you to scuffed, scarred, mis-matched or damaged furniture. Pick your furniture today, knowing that, even on a whim, your family room could be transformed into Trendy, without losing the comfort and family friendly atmosphere.

New Year’s Eve parties bring together the old and the new to be celebrated and memorialized by one and all. The ritual of good food, great memories and celebratory toasts all mark the end of the old year and the beginning of a new and promise filled year. Unfortunately, some of those toasts are memorable for the wrong reasons. Wine stains and drink rings are often the markings left behind of a good time and not something you will enjoy seeing on New Year’s Day. Although your solidly designed Amish hardwoods and upholstered pieces are protected by ARESITOVAR and hopefully custom made elite table pads, the occasional mishap occurs. Here are some tips from the experts on salvaging your good New Year’s memories and furniture.

RED WINE- While ARESISTOVAR has a tested tolerance to alcohol spills your upholstery and carpets may not have that window of resistance. Wine, especially red wine and even non-alcohol grape juices, must be taken care of right away

As fast as possible blot the stain with paper towels.

Always use white paper towels, as colored towels may stain.

Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the stain since this can cause the stain to further penetrate the fabric.

Use cold water only. Hot water may set the stain.

Gently work from the edges of the spill to the center to prevent bleeding or spreading.

Blot the stain until no more wine comes off onto the towel.

If the stain is still prominent after blotting try mixing cool water and some Dawn dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle. With a light spray mist the stain. Be careful not to saturate the fabric. After the stain is covered, gently blot until the stain is removed.

Air dry

REMEMBER- Heed any special care instructions that may have came from the manufacturer. Safe home remedies are best to try before turning to harsh chemicals or paying for a professional fabric cleaning. Whether it is carpet or upholstered furniture, these tips apply.

Some other remedies that many wine drinkers swear by are a simple application of carbonated soda water. This can lift wine stains and other food stains, like barbeque sauce, out of the carpets and fabrics. Another wine connoisseur tip is to deal with red wine spills by using white wine. Odd as it may seem, if you spill red wine you can then pour a glass of white over the stain. The white wine supposedly neutralizes the red wine and the stain seems to disappear before your eyes.

As always, use common sense and care when using any products on your custom upholstered Amish furniture, sofas, arm chairs and ottomans.

1. The perfect sofa or couch is a welcoming sign that you are home. The most utilized and important piece of furniture you purchase besides a bed, may very well be your couch. For many young adults just starting out the couch may function as living room seating, dining room seating and bed. For more established homes the sofa is their decorating showpiece; a masterpiece of elegance and comfort. Two matching sofas, facing each other, creates a formal conversation area while one reclining couch in front of your plasma stand says relaxing comfort.

Whether you use you sofa for quiet Sunday mornings curled up with the newspaper or you are the neighborhood hotspot for the football games, investing in a well framed and well upholstered couch will provide you with years of well appointed seating as well as save you money in the long run. Beware of cardboard framed or poorly constructed sofas that need replacing every few years.

2. The loveseat is the perfect size for small living rooms or as an added seating option with a sofa. Just as in the facing sofa scenario, a smaller room looks elegant with two facing loveseats for a conversation pit. Loveseats also work great in over-sized bedrooms for a personal and cozy reading nook. A well placed love seat is the perfect spot for watching a romantic movie or just stretch out to read.

3. The easy chair or side chair is a very versatile addition to the sofa or couch. They are easily moved when space is needed or you need to rearrange a room. When paired in small places may actually work better than a larger couch. While a couch tolerates company and companionship, whether you want it or not, the easy chair is a one man or woman show.

Following the same advise on purchasing a couch is wise. One well bought chair can be used for a lifetime and re-used in other rooms of the house as tastes or styles change. Sturdy framing of the arms and back in solid wood like the Amish craft is imperative for durability. Adding an ottoman crates the perfect spot for reading or just being.

4. The recliner chair has been in development for centuries. Even in biblical times men ate in a recumbent fashion so it seems to be our nature to recline for full relaxation. There is noting more frustration and money wasting than purchasing a poorly built recliner. If the mechanisms in a recliner are not crafted extremely well it is not long before the feature begins to fail or the seating begins to lean and wobble.

The solid wood framed Morris design from the Amish still uses the concept of the great Arts and Crafts designers William Morris and Gustav Stickley. Simple rods slide to notches on a hinged back in high gauge steel. The chairs are built out of the highest quality solid native woods.

5. Of course, don’t limit yourself to sofas, couches, easy chairs, side chairs and recliners when fitting your home with seating options. Try benches or rocking chairs, especially in Adirondack or Lodge designs. Several ottomans or footstools can be used as extra seating or topped with a tray make tabletops. All Amish living room furniture is guaranteed to be a safe investment in decorating classics.

Words and language evolve just like furniture styles and designs. Throughout the centuries home furnishings have came a very long way from their beginnings and so has the verbiage we use to describe or name the furnishings. Here are a few that you may or may not remember:

SETTEE: The settee was sometimes an upholstered piece and sometimes more like a bench. It had low open arms, a high back and was twice the width of a chair. Almost all great designers of the 17th and 18th century, such as Thomas Sheraton, had one in their collections.

LOVE SEAT: An upholstered seat meant only for two, in some periods it was known as a courting chair. The size of a double chair or a miniature sofa it was first seen during the Queen Anne period and is still popular today as either supplemental seating with a living room set or as an option for small spaces.

DIVAN: From the Turkish culture this was a long, low, backless sofa that usually held a row of pillows placed against a wall. The divan originating out of the Turkish custom of piling up a high stack of rugs to use for seating or resting. This was popular as a sort of day bed.

CHESTERFIELD: The Chesterfield was an overstuffed couch or sofa whose ends were upholstered. The Chesterfield was supposedly named for the 19th-century Earl of Chesterfield. The use of the name Chesterfield to describe a sofa or couch is still popular in Canada.

DAVENPORT: The name Davenport is the name of a series of sofas manufactured by A.H. Davenport Company. Many people began calling all sofas a Davenport due to that brands popularity. Just like many words it was regionally used and most popular in the Midwestern United States and in Northern New York State.

SOFA: A long upholstered seat usually with stuffed back and arms. In 1625 the term came into use from Turkey. In Turkey it meant a “raised section of a floor, covered with carpets and cushions,” In Arabic suffah meant “bench.” By the early 1700’s it was in use in the English language to describe long seating for a living room.

COUCH: The word couch has been used for thousands of years but did not come to mean the seating in the living room until the last few centuries. In ancient Rome the couch was a grouping that would be arranged around a low table. Here men, not women, could recline to eat. By 1340 a couche was “a bed, lair,” from coucher “to lie down.” The traditional couch had the head end raised with only half a back. This was in comparison to a sofa that had both ends raised and a full back.

Amish upholstered furniture is a beautiful investment in comfort. A house can be picture perfect but if it is not comfortable is it truly a home? Comfort does not mean a loss of high quality; in fact it actually is the opposite. Well made, hand-made, aesthetically pleasing furniture is both physically and emotionally comforting to the users. While high end pieces, meant to last a lifetime or longer, are higher in price the investment in Amish built designs will return itself in durability and divine comfort.

A piece of furniture may be beautiful to look at in a showroom but if it is not usable and functional in your home it does not belong there. While sitting and lying on the pieces is one way to test their comfort level, try this test. Look around your home and ask yourself these questions. After a long day in the hard world outside does my home beckon me welcome? Is there a comfortable couch I can stretch out in and relax on? Does the sofa look inviting and warm enough to nap on? Is there a sturdy recliner chair to put my feet up in and watch a show or just do nothing? Is there an easy chair I can curl up in and read my favorite book? Does my home help to soften the edges of a hard day? Do I feel comforted and renewed here? If the answers are not all yes then you will need to make some changes for your home’s health.

Good upholstered furniture pieces like the creations being designed and built by Northern Indiana Amish craftsmen are made by human hands instead of machines. Following in the traditions of the great artisans and furniture designers a hundred years ago the Amish create furniture you hand down to your children and them to theirs. These investment pieces of upholstered furniture may be repeatedly slip covered or recovered or even totally reupholstered over many generations and always hold its form and value. They have crafted sofas, arm chairs, Morris chairs, recliners, gliders and rockers, ottomans and footstools, loveseats and futons all to be lived in and enjoyed. Designed heavily in the Arts and Crafts school of thought that form follows function they are designed to cradle you, body and soul.

The Amish build each piece of furniture to order and every piece are unique. While the process can take as long as three months the high end comfort is worth the wait. How a piece of upholstered furniture is built and the material it was created with is key. The frames should be crafted from solid northern hardwoods and should never contain any fume emitting particle board or have a cardboard frame. Foam rubber cushions dry out over time and become a hard and crumbling mess. Dacron is a much better choice if down and feathers are not available or are too costly. With over one hundred types of fabric, leather, suede and faux leather to choose from your Amish upholstered furniture fabric has easy to care for instructions and a lifetime of comfort and design integrity.
