Wallpapering Without Wallpaper

CathcartWhile wallpaper can add a lot of style, color, and interest to a room, it can be an expensive, time consuming, and frustrating to install. It can also be difficult to remove or cover over when you’re ready to change the look of the room. So, rather than investing in rolls store bought wallpaper you can easily create the look of wallpaper using a few simple crafting techniques.

One great way to add interest and your own personal style to any room is to decoupage paper cutouts onto the wall. Look for interesting designs in magazines, art books, or clipart websites for pictures that you can photocopy multiples of. Black and white pictures look particularly dramatic. Consider nondescript images, such as furniture, flowers, symbols, letters, cups, plates, clothes, shoes, or whatever theme you like best. Copy, cut out, and arrange them on the wall with tape. Once you are happy with the arrangement, glue them to the wall with spray adhesive, and then coat the entire wall with several coats of clear acrylic varnish.

You can also create the look of wallpaper with ink or foam stamps. Just as you would use these stamps on paper, you can apply them directly to the wall to create a quick and simple repeated pattern. Consider painting vertical lines and stamping a design spaced evenly down every other line. You can also randomly stamp a single design all over the wall using different colors.

Inexpensive peel and stick flooring squares can just as easily be attach to a wall as they are to the floor. You can make a nice accent wall out of contrasting squares of two or more colors. You can also use peel and stick corkboard squares to turn an entire wall into a useful message board. If you want to add a little color, paint the corkboard squares before you attach them or cover each square with different colored pieces of felt with spray adhesive. Arrange these colored pieces randomly or with an interesting pattern for a unique look.
