Getting the Rustic Look
One of the most popular decorating styles today is rustic. Rustic style is relaxed and cozy, texturally interesting, and quite sophisticated if done correctly. It’s more than just putting a bunch of old stuff into a room, it’s more about bringing the outdoors in, giving new life to old furniture, and creating a space that is warm and inviting. So, consider some of these tips when decorating in a rustic style.
1. Rustic doesn’t mean trashy or junky, it means giving a room that charming cabin look by filling it with beloved or interesting pieces that have the appearance of age.
2. Rustic decorating is all about wooden furniture that has that handmade look to it.
3. In a bedroom, start with a good, solid, hardwood bed with a large headboard and footboard decorated with spindles, posts, or a canopy.
4. Add some accent pieces, like rustic wooden nightstands, an old coat tree, a floor clock, a rocking chair, side tables, or an old cedar chest to the foot of the bed.
5. In the living room use wooden furniture pieces that have leather cushions or neutral colored fabrics. Add several pillows to soften the look of the wood.
6. In the kitchen or dining room, start with a rustic looking wooden table and place a large vase of wildflowers in the center. Add some rustic iron lamps or art pieces.
7. Bring the outdoors in by using outdoor furniture pieces in unique ways inside. Incorporate a garden arbor into doorways or use benches instead of chairs around a table.
8. Bring in a lot of vinery, such as ivy, to give your home a natural feel. Use plenty of old pottery and let vines spill out of them or use fake foliage to accent mirrors or doorways.
9. Rustic rooms use a more natural color scheme of whites, beiges, browns, greens, or pastels. Keep the colors muted and aged looking for the best rustic looking style.
10. Don’t overdo it! You can accent any room in a rustic style by adding a few baskets, a large vase filled with old branches, a weather-worn mirror, or a rustic style rocking chair.
