Getting Inspired Like the Pros
Like any project or endeavor, you need to spend a little time planning before you jump right into it without some direction. Starting a decorating project without a plan will probably result in causing you undue frustration or leaving you with an unfinished room. So, the first thing you need to do is a little bit of research in order to find your inspiration.
Decorating inspirations can be found anywhere, so always keep an eye out for great decorating ideas. For instance, take a look at department store displays, flip through decorating magazines at the library, look through wallpaper books at home improvement stores, pick up free paint inspiration cards, look through designer fabrics, visit model homes in new neighborhoods, get carpet samples, go to furniture stores, visit decorator show houses, watch design or remodeling shows, and search the internet for literally thousands of inspirational idea.
As you’re looking for inspiration, however, you need to be keeping track of what you find along the way. If you see something interesting that you like, you’ll want to remember it later, so take pictures, clip magazines, make copies, grab paint chips, collect wallpaper samples, get fabric swatches, and record decorating shows. As you gather all of these materials, put them into a decorating file.
Then, take the pieces you’ve collected out and look at them together in the room you’re decorating. See how the colors work together and how they look in the actual room at different times of day in different light. Narrow down your favorites and attach them to a piece of cardboard or poster board. While you may not end up buying all of the things on your board, you will at least have a good idea of what direction you are going and can start creating something fabulous from there!
