Choosing the Right Bed Size

Spindle Sleigh BedAs you know, most beds come in variety of different styles, shapes, and sizes, but you may not know exactly what type of bed is right for you. Understanding the differences between bed sizes can make all the difference when it comes to decorating style and sleeping comfort.

Beds generally come in four standard sizes…twin, full, queen, and king, but each has their own subcategories. Twin beds, also known as single beds, are usually used in kids’ rooms and are 39″ wide by 75″ long. However, extra long twin beds are 80″ long to better accommodate adults and are commonly used in dorms. Sheets for both of beds are affordable and easily found.

Full beds, also known as double beds, are most commonly used in guest rooms. They can accommodate two people, but are only recommended for the occasional sleep for two as it can get quite cramped. Full beds are 54″ wide by 75″ long and are the perfect size for small guest rooms. Sheets are readily available in a wide range of styles.

Queen beds are the most popular size for most married couples because they offer more wiggle room to get a good night’s sleep. Queen beds are 60″ wide by 80″ long, a good size for most people. Adding a footboard to a queen bed will generally not interfere with most sleepers, unless they are taller than six feet. Queen sheets are commonly available, but a little pricier than full.

King beds come in two sizes…standard and California. King beds are great for large or oversized master bedrooms and people! Standard king beds are 76″ wide by 80″ long and California king beds are 72″ wide by 84″ long. King beds offer the most comfort for couples and taller individuals. Sheets for both king beds are usually the most expensive and difficult to find. However, remember that both king beds are different dimensions and need the appropriate fitting sheets, so read the packaging carefully for standard or California king sizes.
