Choosing Furniture for Life
When you move into your first apartment, townhome, or house you will no doubt need to buy furnishings for each room. Rather than buying inexpensive furniture that will only last a few years at best you should consider investing in basic pieces of higher quality that will last a lifetime. As you grow older your living space usually grows with you, so you’ll want to purchase pieces that will evolve over time while providing you with multiple uses over the years.
Instead of choosing large, heavy furniture pieces, look for smaller pieces that will fit into any size room and can easily be moved around when rearranging or cleaning. If you do choose a larger piece of furniture, make sure to measure the room, doors, and hallway angles to make sure you will be able to fit that oversized piece into the room in the first place.
Always opt for more storage when choosing new furniture pieces. Rather than just a side table, choose an end table with extra drawers and shelves underneath. Instead of a plain coffee table, choose one that has a lid or large drawers underneath. You can never have too much storage, so always opt for the furniture pieces that offer even the smallest of extra storage space.
Purchase your living room chairs in pairs. Many people purchase a large sofa for the living room, but two loveseats will actually provide more seating space and they will give the room balance and uniformity. You can also create a more intimate conversation area that can be easily rearranged in a variety of home layouts.
When choosing furniture pieces for life, keep them within the same color or style family so that you can mix and match them throughout the house. This way they will always coordinate no matter where they end up in your home. For fabrics, stick with neutral colors of a darker shade that will easily coordinate with any decorating scheme and won’t show dirt or wear.
